The year 2026 will also coincide with the UN International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, underscoring the essential role of volunteers in science outreach and education.

The official theme for IDL 2026 is «Light for a Sustainable Future», highlighting how light-based science and technology contribute to sustainable development worldwide.

There is a extensive archive of ideas, materials, and past IDL events. Reusing successful activities is encouraged, as each year typically attracts new audiences. The IDL is an initiative by UNESCO.
